Ueno Park This place was declared as an historic "Park" in 1873 and at the time was a first for Japan. Shitamachi Museum To take a peek at the daily lives of ordinary people during the Meiji and Taisho eras (1868-1926) look no further than the Shitamachi Museum. The museum exhibits toys, clothes, household items, and pictures of a city far more scenic than at present, all items once belonging to the inhabitants of the "downtown" world.

Ueno Zoological Gardens This zoo opened as Japan's first zoo in 1882 (the 15th year of the Meiji era.) and contains about 500 different kinds of animals.

Tokyo National Museum This museum opened in 1872 is the first museum in Japan. The museum exhibits cultural art and archeological objects of Japan as well as other Asian countries. The total amount of the collection is more than 110,000 objects. There are 87 National Treasures and 631 Important Cultural Properties amongst them.

Ameyoko "Ameyoko" is a short form for "Ameya-Yokocho" which means "candy store alleys." Alternatively, "Ame" can be understood as meaning 'American' because many American products were available there just after World War Two.This busy market street, which started off as a black market after the Second World is also famous for its discounted goods as dashing sales folk constantly call out to passers by as trains hurtle by on the overhead railroad lines.

Okachimachi Wholesale District of Jewelry There are over 2,000 wholesale houses for jewelry and its associated manufacturing houses around JR Okachimachi station. The district is thus known as Jewelry Town where prices are often just 50% of the regular retail prices. For a bargain in the jewelry field there is no better place to visit.

Yushima Tenmangu Yushima Tenmangu was reportedly built in 458AD. Yushima Tenmangu, also called Yushima Tenjin, is well known as the home of the God of Learning and Education which leads to many students visiting to pray for success in passing their examinations. A big festival is held each May and dozens of Mikoshi (miniature portable shrines) gather and are carried around the area. Yushima Tenman-gu is a corner of Tokyo forever in the minds of those visiting the area.
