To take a peek at the daily lives of ordinary people during the Meiji and Taisho eras (1868-1926) look no further than the Shitamachi Museum. The museum exhibits toys, clothes, household items, and pictures of a city far more scenic than at present, all items once belonging to the inhabitants of the "downtown" world. |

"Ameyoko" is a short form for "Ameya-Yokocho" which means "candy store alleys." Alternatively, "Ame" can be understood as meaning 'American' because many American products were available there just after World War Two.This busy market street, which started off as a black market after the Second World is also famous for its discounted goods as dashing sales folk constantly call out to passers by as trains hurtle by on the overhead railroad lines. |

Yushima Tenmangu was reportedly built in 458AD. Yushima Tenmangu, also called Yushima Tenjin, is well known as the home of the God of Learning and Education which leads to many students visiting to pray for success in passing their examinations. A big festival is held each May and dozens of Mikoshi (miniature portable shrines) gather and are carried around the area. Yushima Tenman-gu is a corner of Tokyo forever in the minds of those visiting the area. |
